Acne is a condition of the
sebaceous hair follicle. The hair follicles, or pores, in your skin
contain sebaceous glands (also called oil glands). These glands make
sebum, which is an oil that lubricates hair and skin. Under normal
conditions, sebum travels up the hair follicle and out to the skin's
surface. However, with acne, sebum is trapped within the follicle,
clogging the follicle. The bacterium that seems to cause acne is
called Propioibacterium acnes (P. acne) and is present in everybody's
skin, usually lodged in the hair follicle. The clogged follicle
becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. When sebaceous glands get
clogged, sebum builds inside the follicle; P. acne multiplies rapidly
and can result in acne.

Lights
The British Journal of
Dermatology, Phototherapy with blue and red light was studied in
the treatment of mild to moderate acne .
After 12
weeks of 15-minute daily active treatments with a portable light
source, a mean improve-ment of 76% in inflammatory lesions was
observed.
Investigators and patients favored blue-red light
therapy, with more patients achieving marked improve-ment or
clearance than in any of the other treatment group.
